Book Review - "For one more day" by Mitch Albom

Hello everyone,

A few days back I read "For one more day" by Mitch Albom. An amazing book. The book tells a story about a man who leaves all the hope and attempts a suicide! But he is saved eventually and rather unexpectedly by a person from his past, his dead mother. The narration is quite lively and Full of emotions. It emphases on one's habit of making mistakes specially by misunderstanding people around us. A must read if you are looking for inspirational book. Happy Reading!!

You can purchase it from Amazon by clicking the link below.

Art - Tips for Still life sketching

Hello everyone!!

Hope you all are doing well. In the next few days I will be displaying my old sketching and pencil work along with some tips and experiences. Looking at my previous work I inferred that there is always a scope to improve. At the same time not forgetting that it takes practice, hard-work, concentration and of-course "time" to reach a great degree of fineness in any field.

                                                   Still life: Steel Glass, 2003

I started practising the art of sketching seriously about 9 years ago. The above given is one of my initial still life sketches drawn back in 2003 as the date on top-left indicates. Signed by my school drawing teacher Mr. H J S Walia, a great teacher and a great artist too. The day I sketched it, it was near perfect to me. Today I will say, it is pretty good if not that good! Also I will put up better quality images through scanner later on.

The thing I understood over years about still life sketching is that the correct display of light intensity is very important. In simple words "the various shades of grey" are to be chosen carefully specially for "still life". The combination of dark and light shades gives us the ability to create real like contrast on the paper. All these are to be created using different pencil types and "pressure". Pressure here is really important because a fine range of shades of grey can be created using one single pencil. The artist who masters the intensity can easily draw the glass, liquid etc. effect in still life. Also the smooth transition or blending of the various shades gives it a 3-dimensional look on a 2-dimensional paper.

Poem - Into the sunshine

Living in cold and dark,
no new inspiration and no spark,
a frosty layer on me has grown.

Stepped up on the stair,
leading to somewhere,
I kept going on and on.

On seeing the coming light,
took a turn towards the right,
that light since long I have known.

Climbing the last stair,
leaving behind despair,
a whole new world to me you have shown.

Into the sunshine,
feeling so divine,
trying to open slightly hurting eyes of mine.

Warm wind touched me,
Open your eyes and see,
I promise you that you are going to be fine.

So whenever next time,
hope seems to decline,
walk into the sunshine,
just walk into the sunshine.

Article - Tips to better portrait sketching

Portrait sketching is a popular form of art. People love making portraits and being portrayed! As artists strive for making life like portraits, this form requires more practice and exactness than other forms. There are numerous techniques artists devise and a new ones can be discovered by anyone to give a more natural look. Reconsidering reviews by others given on a finished work helps a lot in improving it. But, you yourself can be a good critic for your work.

Here are some tips to enhance the finesse of your own work:

1) After finishing the work, go for a stroll or do something else, forget about the sketch completely. Then return to the art piece, observe it as someone else's work. Review it evaluating different aspects, improve the shortcomings.

2)  Try not to finish your work in a single go. Distribute it over span of few days so that you get more to concentrate on small areas and add vivid details. Patience is must.

3) Refer to the fine portraits by other artists. It will inspire you, suggest you more techniques and you'll be able to know where you may improve.

4) Art gives pleasure to the viewers so should it give to the artist. Feel happy and contented of your fully finished art piece for few days till you are ready to work on the next creation. Being satisfied by your own creation is must, thats what art is for and it keeps you going on.

5) If you cannot see any shortcomings in your previous sketches even after few weeks, then you are not actually progressing from learning point of view. With time feed your mind with better work so that you can well see flaws in your previous work, you didn't notice earlier. And this is when you are actually ready to begin with the next one.

Be a better critic to your own work because only you know what degree of perfection you want to acheive. Hope this article benefits you in a positive way. Keep creating , keep sketching!!

Poem - The rule of change

Heading happily towards my badminton court,
at the backyard I used to play my favourite sport,
I took some soil in my hand,
asked her "Why you feel like sand ?"
To settle my curiosity the soil replied,
"Here was once a mighty river that dried".

It struck me like a bolt from blue,
and birds of my vast imagination flew,
I was submerged with water all around,
my feet were lifted up from the ground,
Touched by wind and weather so pleasant,
the next moment I returned to present.

The soil continued: This world is a place so strange,
Everyone has to follow the rule of change,
Even the mightiest of rivers shift their place,
and at some turns, slow their pace,
Never be arrogant due to what you possess,
nothing stays forever, not even success,
Behaving snootily in the days of bliss,
soon you may find yourself in a hopeless abyss,
Change a bit and a way you'll make,
because the stiffest of the trees are the first to break.

Article - Dark Energy : Space vacuum is no more a vacuum

The word "Dark Energy" brings to our mind an image of something like black magic or devil but it has nothing to do with these. Most of the energy we have on earth comes from the sun in the form of light and heat. It is visible and detectable energy. Some kind of energy that is invisible and mysterious is the dark energy. It is supposed to be the reason for the expansion of the universe (drifting away of stars and galaxies from each other).

Probably when we talk about the vacuum in the space it might not be so.There still may exist something that we are not able to perceive with our senses or instruments. Just like you cannot smell with your eyes, you need a nose. The Dark Energy Survey (DES) aims to study the expanding universe. It will use 4-metre Victor M. Blanco Telescope located at Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory (CTIO) in Chile. If we are able to crack the exact nature and behaviour of this energy, it will surely change our concept of what we call energy and what we can do with it. It is abundant in the space comprising more than 70% of the universe itself. It is a potential fuel for artificial satellites we send in the far outer space to explore our neighbourhood. It may solve the energy problem for our probes into the space. They will be able to travel far without carrying any fuel. It will considerably revolutionise space travel. Or even someday the space travel would become as common as a bus or train travel. If higher intellectual life forms like ours exist on other solar systems, they might even know how to harness the energy and make use of it. These are just some enigmatic questions whose answers human race is to found.

So, space vacuum is no more a vacuum now. If you can't see it doesn't mean there isn't anything. The situation gets weirder when you are writing an article alone in your room, look around and think that there might be something or even someone else around you. Its just  horrifying!!

Article - What would separate you from the robotic you ?

Human mind is probably one of the most complex things existing. Viewing
through the lens called science, you doubt does anything like a mind even exists or is it
only a combination of our concious and sub-concious brain activities. See yourself the level of
complexity ! Everything that happens to us is stored in the form of memories in a our
brain. What a person thinks or acts today, largely depends upon the experiences and
conclusions from life he has spent till now. Influences of our family members, friends,
famous personalities and idols, movies, games etc. have significant impact on our way of
thinking. Even reading this article might give rise to new thoughts, theories and
inferences, though it might seem like a daily ordinary reading activity. So, as far as
humans are concerned, they react upon a given situation on the basis of history that
resides in the form of links between neurons in their brain.

Many popular fiction books discuss "What if the robots were given the same memories as you ? Then what would separate you from the robotic you ?" . "The android concept" as most of us know. If your answer is "feelings" distinguish the both, then from the point of view of a biologist,
human feelings like pain and pleasure may be interpreted in terms of some chemicals in
our body being released in response to external influences. They are just complex
chemicals and can be artificially produced and induced into robot's body someday in future. The
other aspect is capability to learn on our own. If we are able to produce a complex
artificial brain for a robot, it may possess this ability too. Then what actually makes us so
human ?
There are few words that cannot be defined in technical terms, theses are hope,
faith, love, hatred, like, dislike that we experience in our daily lives. Some of them exist
just without having any reason. You may dislike a food for how it smells while others
in your family might love eating it. Here comes into role the uniqueness of one's personality.
Even definition of beauty is more of a psychological rather than a physical concept. Imagining
something that has never happened. Generating a picture in your mind just by listening to
a description. We always create a pre-handed personality image of a person we going to
meet for the first time just from their name, age, profession etc. We just can't help it. The
intuitions that astonish us by turning to reality the next moment. Motivating yourself by
imagining in your mind the accomplishment of a goal so many times and it may be possible
that it never turns into reality. It might seem too illogical but everyone of us dream of
fulfilling some goal. Sometimes we are changed by circumstances and sometimes
circumstances change us.

Humans make mistakes and they are never perfect in following the guidelines. But they always reach where they are destined to be. America was discovered out of a mistake! Even if robots in the coming decades will achieve all human like characteristics, still we shall have the privilege to imagine, dream and achieve that they can never understand because they are just so humanly things!!

Poem - Life itself is a dance

All these years I observed that,
Life itself is a dance,
if you don't agree,
just take a glance.

One step away or towards,
a person we advance,
Sometimes balancing our relations,
or while managing the finance,
Committing mistakes, realisation and then mending,
our living skills we are to enhance,
With some people we are destined to share ways,
even if it seems like we met by chance.

We move as God plays the music,
tune may be happy or sad for instance,
But the best moments are when,
God himself becomes your partner for the Dance.

Poem - Besides the moon

Some days of our life are not as good as others. It might happen that after working so hard we don't get the desired results or even someone spoils everything. So for those days, faith in God and ourselves is necessary.

On the roof,
besides the moon,
wishing everything,
turns out good very soon.

I had worked hard,
really hard since that June,
but it was blown away,
like a boat in the typhoon.

Listening on fm,
a very sad tune,
with it tears rolling down,
like late monsoon.

Then came you and said,
Stop acting like a maroon
soon your hardwork,
would prove to be a boon.

All your misfortunes,
I would prune,
and you are going to love,
to who you turn out soon.

Poem - Gold and the Goldsmith

Like some people, a gold nugget does not know its own worth and what it is capable of being. The poem accounts for the difficulties it has to go through while becoming a masterpiece, in the form of conversation between gold nugget and goldsmith.

I am very tough,
with my egdes so rough,
I just wonder,
what can you make out of me?

You are raw and old,
but a piece of precious gold,
I will make an elegant pendant
and a chain out of thee.

But you will put me on heat,
what if I got burned by this treat?

Don't you little nugget worry,
I will melt you slowly,
and not do any hurry.

Burning is non-essential
and painful in my view,
what will happen to me next,
tell me this too.

Gold never burns,
only impurities in it do,
Then I will put you in a mould,
on gradually becoming cold,
as a beautiful pendant,
you will unfold,
to make a chain,
the rest of you will be rolled,
a diamond at centre,
the pendant will hold,
finally to a rich lady,
they will be sold.

What if I would break,
as you would roll me into a snake?

Poem - I met an Atheist

I met an atheist,
one who knows,
the God better than,
a pseudo-theist shows.

He wasn't like a pseudo-theist,
who longs for downfall of his foes,
and day by day,
whose wishlist grows,
God is merely a wishtree to ask for riches,
before Him he everyday bows,
but hunger for money and dominance,
from his mind never goes.

Whereas in the atheist's blood,
goodness like a river flows,
understands the meaning of humanity,
though near any temple, he never slows,

Poem - Birdie's flight

A little birdie standing on cliff at great height,
creature's body is in the grip of fright,
gathering all the courage, pulls his muscles tight,
spreading delicate wings with confidence, takes his first flight.

Day after day he masters the art,
learning from experience, becomes smart,
but never departs mother's words from his heart,
what she taught at the very start.

She said that don't fall in trap due to hunger and thirst,
rarely in nature, grains are found not soiled by dust,
if they are too clean and shinny, look for the danger at first,
they might be spread delibrately, you'll be captured if you trust.

His wings are now robust and possess strength to fly,
sometimes he competes with the wind passing by,
everyday goes higher than the high,
because his dream was to touch the sky.
